Steve MacLean
Managing Director, US Arctic Program
Steve MacLean is a lifelong Alaskan, living in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow). He has worked all over the state from Southeast to the western Aleutians, the Pribilof Islands, and North Slope villages. Steve received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Whitman College and a Master's of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University. Steve most recently served as an analyst for the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, and as the Arctic Marine Program Director for The Nature Conservancy in Alaska. He has traveled around the world but always comes back to Alaska. Steve has been swimming in every ocean of the world, including north of the Arctic Circle, and south of the Antarctic Circle. Steve enjoys hiking, cycling, hunting, and fishing, and anything that gets him out into Alaska’s wilderness.
“Wild places are important to connect people to nature in an increasingly complex and hectic world. The Arctic is one of the last wild places on Earth where landscapes and seascapes exist as they have for tens of thousands of years. A place traditional cultures continue to be part of the ecosystem, and others can visit and learn about to feel that connection and remember we are part of a natural world.”
