Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Two Priority Landscapes in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region

The meandering course of river Rio Pinquen, Amazon rainforest, Peru

The Ecuadorian Amazon is at high risk of deforestation and degradation, with pressure on forest ecosystems increasing as competing land uses from extractive and agricultural activities continue to rise. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program (ASL) II aims at improving integrated landscape management and conservation of ecosystems in
targeted areas of the Amazon region. For the ASL II Child Project in Ecuador, the objective is to improve the ecological connectivity of two priority landscapes of the Ecuadorian Amazon, through the establishment of two connectivity corridors and associated management mechanisms, to ensure the long-term biodiversity conservation of its ecosystems.

The project will work at both regional and local levels. At regional level, the project will strengthen the institutional framework for the integrated management of the Circunscripcion Territorial Amazonica de Ecuador (CTEA). At local level, the project will work in the priority landscapes of Putumayo-Aguarico (North) and Palora-Pastaza (South) to improve ecological connectivity, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest-friendly productive activities for local populations, with an integrated landscape management approach.
